Hyperlipidemia Care

What is hyperlipidemia?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the fats of your blood. Everyone has it, but too much of it can lead to serious health problems.

Cholesterol comes in two forms. There’s HDL, which is healthy, and LDL, which is unhealthy. Too much of the bad type — or not enough of the good — can trigger high cholesterol or what is known as hyperlipidemia. With high cholesterol, the bad kind of cholesterol slowly builds up in the vital arteries to your brain and heart, causing serious health issues.

What causes hyperlipidemia?

Unhealthy lifestyle choices can lead to hyperlipidemia. These unhealthy behaviors include:

  • Smoking
  • Excess weight
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Little or no physical activity or exercise

High cholesterol can also be heredity. Your parents or grandparents may have passed along genes that cause your body to produce too much cholesterol. This condition is known as familial hypercholesterolemia.

How is hyperlipidemia diagnosed?

There aren’t symptoms associated with hyperlipidemia, and that’s why it’s important to go in for regular check-ups. Dr. George can detect this condition with a simple blood test.

Dr. George may advise you not to eat or drink anything the night before your blood test. During the test, he takes a small sample of blood from your finger or arm. You shouldn’t feel any pain. A lab test will tell you the amount of cholesterol in your blood. Dr. George’s office contacts you with your results and informs you of your treatment options.

How is hyperlipidemia treated?

Dr. George works with you to manage your cholesterol levels naturally as the first course of action. He will recommend getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, and cutting back on red meats and fried foods. He may suggest that you incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your meals.

Prescription medications can also help manage your high cholesterol when lifestyle changes aren’t enough. Drugs used to lower cholesterol include statins, selective cholesterol absorption inhibitors, and resins.
